Juicy Strawberries
"Juicy STRAWBERRIES", 12" x 9" oil on linen.
I purchased these juicy strawberries at a Westmount neighbourhood supermarket in late winter 2019. A still life was set up and photos were taken to examine the composition & lighting possibilities. The artwork was painted from life and I refrigerated the still life at the end of each day. Over the period of 2 weeks while developing the painting the strawberries began to ferment. Finally it became necessary to reference the photos in order to maintain the freshness and complete the artwork. The strawberries were delicious!
More about "Juicy STRAWBERRIES"...
In 2018 I was preparing for a workshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was very exciting, a wonderful experience creating art under the eye of The Artist's Guild. One of the most significant things from an artistic perspective was my exposure to the South West use of the brilliance of orangey red with vibrant yellow. This combination of colours appeared almost everywhere, is in fact utilized in their state flag. While having see this many times, the exposure in a new environment allowed the colours to act on me a sort of catalyst. The red is at work here.
The past 5 years have been a transition period for me. Having left the world of fashion, it's aesthetics and influences I'm free to rediscover a new artistic perspective. It's been a remarkable challenge often feeling like a cork bobbing around in the ocean... But, now, new ideas are emerging. I play with ideas and especially colour, discovering the new, every day in the beauty of ordinary things.
